Secret Server Terminology
Secrets
A secret is an item of sensitive information that you want to store in Secret
Server. A secret can be created for
many types of data including:
- Passwords
- Credit Card information
- Email accounts
- Product license keys
- PINs
- Combination locks
- Web passwords
If the type that you need is not available then you can create your own using
the Secret Type Designer.
Secret Type Designer
The Secret Type Designer is an administrator feature that allows you to create
templates for different types of secrets. You are able to add customized
fields such as:
-
URL field - Makes the field a clickable link
-
Password - Add a password generator function to help you create
strong passwords and a password strength indicator
-
Notes - Adding a notes section is valuable for any miscellaneous data or
comments you want to make about the secret.
AES 256 bit encryption
Secret Server uses AES 256 bit encryption to protect all of your data. AES is
an acronym for
Advanced Encryption Standard and 256 bit is the most secure type of AES
encryption. Secret Server uses this to store your information in a safe and
secure way so no one else can read it.
Active Directory
Active Directory has many uses, but for the purposes of Secret Server, Active
Directory is what allows users to login to Secret Server using their
workstation/network password when on a domain. Active Directory integration is
only available in Secret
Server - Installed Edition.
Organization Code
Only applying to Secret Server - Online Edition, the organization code is used
to distinguish each instance of Secret Server (seperates your company's Secret
Server from another company's Secret Server). Each user must enter their
organization code to access their Secret Server.
Folders
Users can now categorize secrets by putting them in folders based on clients,
regions, office locations, etc. Only administrator can create folder names,
however, all users can place secrets into folders.
